How to Get Better at Valorant: 8 Habits That Actually Work

You already know the basics. You know what each agent does, you can aim well enough to win gunfights sometimes, and you've read the beginner guides. But your rank isn't moving. You're stuck somewhere in Iron-Bronze-Silver and every ranked session feels like you're playing on quicksand.

The problem usually isn't aim. It's the habits around everything else.

Here are 8 specific habits that separate stuck-in-low-elo players from players who consistently climb.

1. Fix Your Crosshair Placement First

This comes before aim training because it's more impactful. Aim training teaches you to flick accurately. Crosshair placement means you barely need to flick at all.

The habit: keep your crosshair at head height at all times, pre-aimed at angles where an enemy could appear. When you round a corner, your crosshair should already be where someone's head would be โ€” not at chest level, not pointing at the floor.

Practice this in deathmatch by consciously forcing your crosshair to stay at head height. It feels unnatural at first. After a week it becomes automatic, and your headshot percentage goes up without a single aim trainer session.

2. Learn One Utility Setup Per Map, Not Everything

New-to-intermediate players often skip utility or use it randomly. The fix isn't memorizing 50 lineups โ€” it's knowing 1-2 purpose-built setups per map.

Pick your agent, pick one map, and learn: one smoke that blocks the common sightline into your site, one flash that makes your corner-peek safer. That's it. Use those two things every round. You'll immediately create pressure that your teammates can work with instead of winging it.

If you play Sage, learn to wall the obvious choke on each map. If you play Omen or Brimstone, learn one default smoke per site per map. Utility used consistently beats utility used brilliantly but unreliably.

3. Stop Peeking and Start Holding

Low elo is full of aggressive peeking โ€” and most of it bleeds kills. The habit that changes your economy and your round outcomes fastest: hold angles instead of pushing them unless you have a clear read.

Let enemies come to you. Pre-aim the spot. When they peek, you're already on them. When they don't, you haven't burned a util or given away your position.

There are times to push โ€” post-plant, entry fragging with your team, when you've isolated a 1v1. But if you're peeking because you're bored or anxious, you're probably dying for nothing.

4. Manage Your Economy or You'll Never Stabilize

Economy mistakes are invisible to low elo players but cost rounds constantly. The pattern: everyone loses pistol round, two players eco, three players force. You lose again. Now you're in a spiral.

The habit: communicate your credits before buy phase. If the team is full eco, you full eco. If you're the only one who can afford a rifle, you consider dropping or buying a sidearm only. One player with a rifle in a broken eco round usually just feeds the enemy team a gun.

General thresholds worth knowing: below 2,000 credits = eco or light buy. 3,000-3,900 = half-buy options. 4,000+ = full buy. Adjust based on team.

5. Match Your Agent to How You Actually Play

A lot of low elo players pick agents they see pros use or that look cool, then play them against their natural instincts. If you're aggressive and like peeking, playing a controller (Omen, Harbor, Brimstone) without understanding default setups puts you in a bad spot โ€” your team expects smokes, you're peeking, nobody wins.

Pick an agent that matches your instincts:

  • Aggressive entry style โ†’ Jett, Reyna, Neon, Phoenix
  • Passive hold style โ†’ Cypher, Killjoy, Chamber (when meta allows)
  • Support-minded โ†’ Sage, Skye, Breach
  • Mid-skill-curve duelist with util โ†’ Raze, Yoru

You play better when your agent's kit reinforces rather than fights your natural playstyle.

6. Play Ranked Every Session, Not Just Unrated

Unrated doesn't have stakes. When there are no consequences, you don't make the same decisions you'd make under pressure, which means you don't practice the decisions that actually matter in ranked.

The habit: play ranked when you practice, even if you lose. Losing ranked games while building real habits beats winning unrated games while reinforcing bad ones. You want reps that mirror the pressure of an actual ranked environment.

One session of ranked beats three sessions of unrated for actual improvement.

7. Do One VOD Review Per Week โ€” But Do It Right

VOD reviewing works. But most people do it wrong: they watch their highlights (kills), skip their deaths, and learn nothing.

The habit: watch deaths only. Every single round you died, rewind and ask two questions: 1) Where was my crosshair when I got hit? 2) What information did I have (or miss) before that peek?

One session of this per week โ€” just 20-30 minutes โ€” will show you patterns you can't see mid-game. Most players have 2-3 repeating death scenarios they don't know exist until they see them on VOD.

8. Play for Map Control, Not Kills

This is the highest-leverage mindset shift on this list. Low elo players play for kills. Climbing players play for space.

Map control means: your team occupies the sightlines and positions that force enemies to reveal themselves before they're ready. When you control mid on Bind or Ascent, your team can rotate faster, attack from multiple angles, and respond to any site push.

The habit: every round, ask "what space does my team need?" before asking "where can I get a kill?" When you're holding a position that creates space โ€” a mid-control spot, a flank watch, a doorway that cuts rotation โ€” you're contributing even in rounds where you never fire a shot.
