Elden Ring Beginner Guide: 10 Tips to Stop Dying and Actually Progress
Elden Ring has one of the steepest learning curves in gaming. Most players die repeatedly in the first hour, put the game down, and miss one of the best experiences in modern gaming. The good news: the difficulty isn't random. It has logic. Once you understand that logic, the game opens up completely.
Here are 10 tips that will save you hours of frustration and actually get you progressing.
1. Always Level Vigor First
Vigor is your health pool, and in Elden Ring, health is everything. New players often spread their levels across multiple stats early on โ don't. Pump Vigor to at least 40 before investing heavily elsewhere. You'll stop getting one-shotted by enemies that should be manageable, and the game will immediately feel more fair.
2. Torrent Is Your Best Friend โ Use Your Horse
Torrent, your spectral steed, is unlocked early and most players underuse him. Torrent lets you traverse the open world at speed, escape dangerous enemies instantly, and access areas unreachable on foot. In large outdoor boss fights, Torrent gives you a massive mobility advantage. Mount up constantly โ don't walk anywhere you can ride.
3. Don't Fight Every Enemy โ Run Past to Explore
One of Elden Ring's biggest mental traps is feeling obligated to clear every enemy you encounter. You don't. The open world is designed for exploration, and sometimes the best move is sprinting past a tough enemy cluster to reach a new Site of Grace or discover a shortcut. Pick your fights โ not every encounter needs to be won on the first visit.
4. Summon Ashes for Boss Fights
Spirit Ashes let you summon AI allies directly into boss fights, and they're a legitimate part of the game โ not a cheat. Summons draw aggro, create openings for your attacks, and make solo boss encounters manageable. Use them. The Lone Wolf Ashes (three wolves) available early are excellent throughout the first half of the game.
5. Upgrade Your Weapon Early (Smithing Stones)
A +4 or +5 weapon hits dramatically harder than a base weapon, even if both have the same scaling stat. Collect Smithing Stones as you explore โ they're found in caves, ruins, and enemy drops โ and upgrade your preferred weapon consistently. Don't hoard materials. A stronger weapon now makes everything easier now.
6. Two-Hand Your Weapon for More Damage
Holding your weapon with both hands (Triangle/Y + attack button, depending on platform) increases your damage output without spending a single stat point. It also reduces the Strength requirement to wield weapons effectively. For most builds early in the game, two-handing your main weapon is simply better damage at no cost.
7. Learn Enemy Patterns โ Dodge Through Attacks, Not Away
New players instinctively roll away from attacks. The correct technique in Elden Ring is usually rolling through attacks โ directly into the enemy as the hitbox passes. This positions you closer for a counterattack and uses your iframes (invincibility frames during the roll animation) more effectively. Watch two or three attacks before engaging aggressively. Every enemy has a readable pattern.
8. Use Your Flasks Wisely โ Don't Hoard Them
Your Sacred Flask heals you. Use it when you drop below 50% health, not when you're about to die in a single hit. Hoarding flasks until a critical moment is a common mistake โ pro players use them proactively to stay healthy and keep pressure on. You refill at every Site of Grace, so there's no reason to save them for a better moment.
9. Explore Off the Critical Path for Better Gear
Elden Ring's open world is stacked with gear, weapons, and abilities that aren't on the main story path. Some of the best early-game equipment is tucked in optional dungeons, catacombs, and caves just off the beaten path. If you're struggling with a boss, the answer is often to explore more of the region first. Better gear changes the math entirely.
10. Join Elden Ring Community Guides for Boss-Specific Tips
Every boss in Elden Ring has community-developed strategies, summon recommendations, and pattern breakdowns. The Elden Ring subreddit, Fextralife wiki, and YouTube guides are invaluable resources. If a boss is genuinely blocking you after multiple attempts, spend 10 minutes on a guide โ you'll usually find a specific tip that makes the fight click immediately.
The game rewards patience and curiosity. Stop rushing, start exploring, and the Lands Between will stop feeling like a wall and start feeling like the adventure it is.
