Start With Your Build, Not the Story

Most RPG mistakes happen in character creation. It's tempting to pick whatever looks cool and dive into the narrative — but choosing stats and abilities without a plan leads to a weak mid-game where you're restarting or grinding to compensate.

Before you create your character, decide on a role: tank, DPS, or support. Then work backwards from that goal. If you want to be a frontline fighter, prioritize Strength or Vitality over Intelligence. Keep your bag or inventory clean. Clutter leads to missed vendor opportunities and decision paralysis mid-combat when you're trying to figure out what to use. Sort your inventory after every major encounter — identify what's worth keeping and what's junk.

Sell vendor trash consistently. Every RPG has items that exist purely to convert into gold. Identify them early (usually grey or common-tier items with no stat value) and make a habit of selling them whenever you hit a shop.

Understand the gear economy. A weapon with better stats for your build at lower item level almost always beats a higher-level weapon with off-stats. Don't hoard gear "just in case." And critically — don't hoard potions. Use them in hard fights. Hoarding consumables until you never need them is a running RPG joke for a reason; use your resources to win harder fights faster.

Combat Fundamentals That Never Change

Whether you're playing turn-based or action RPG, three principles win every fight: positioning, debuff management, and resource pacing.

Positioning means understanding where your characters are relative to enemies and terrain. Many RPGs reward flanking, high ground, or avoiding certain enemy attack arcs. Even in games where positioning seems less critical, staying mobile and not standing in damage zones adds up across a long campaign.

Debuffs and status effects are underused by most players. Slowing, silencing, burning, or bleeding enemies changes the math of a fight dramatically. Learn what your debuff abilities do and apply them consistently — especially on elite enemies and bosses.

The most important resource management rule: don't blow your best cooldowns on trash mobs. Save your most powerful abilities for elites and bosses where they actually change the outcome. Most combat deaths come from arriving at a boss encounter with abilities on cooldown and resources depleted because of inefficient use on the mobs before it.
